Education is not free in Uganda. Though most schools are reasonably priced, they are not affordable to single parents whose income might be $1/day. Desana provides approximately 20 scholarships to Primary Schools for children of poverty. Students are selected on the basis of need, eagerness to excel and past performances. Grades are monitored every term. Parents are encouraged to assist with homework, if possible, and take active rolls in their children’s academic performance and school functions. Children who perform poorly and do not take their education seriously are dismissed from the Program so that others may take advantage of the assistance.
